York County: Class, tutoring for both young and old!


Two great opportunities for area residents coming up:

  • An AARP drivers safety class will be offered for ages 50 and older at Cox Harley Davidson 1178 Galleria Blvd., Rock Hill. The class will be  9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 3-4 Participants must attend both days to receive their certificate, which might reduce their rates for collision and liability insurance. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. You do not have to be an AARP member to attend. To register, call Gene Esarove at 803-547-4553.

 

  • Tutoring in reading will be provided for children in grades 1-6 at the Literacy Clinic in the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Winthrop University. The cost for seven sessions (from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays) is $15.  The tutoring will be offered by undergraduate students majoring in elementary or special education and supervised  by Elke  Schneider. The clinic begins Feb. 28. For information or an application, e-mail schneidere@winthrop.edu. Applications are due Feb. 14.

This weekend: Historic Home Tour, Christmas in Olde York, lots of events!

Don’t miss this weekend’s Christmas in Olde York celebration!!!

Four gorgeous historic homes on tour, as well as three other historic sites, with carolers, candles and refreshments. Click here for a list: Home Tour (right below Holiday Parades). Tickets are only $10.

Plus, many businesses and restaurants downtown will be open, decorated and offering special deals and goodies. Pick up a Christmas tree at the Farmer’s Market!

Two free events: Stop by Yorktowne Village during the Christmas Tour hours. They are having a “Festival of the Trees.” All three buildings are open, and there will be refreshments and music. 44 Ross Cannon St.

Honor our local veterans

Here’s an updated list of how to honor those who put it all on the line for our freedom:

* 11 a.m. today – Chester County’s annual Veterans Day ceremony will be upstairs in the Chester County War Memorial, 154 Main St., Chester. In addition to speakers, a Junior ROTC troop will present the colors.

* 4 p.m. today –  A special Veterans Day program will be presented by veterans Jay Randell and John Hill at the Clover Woman’s Club meeting. The meeting will be at 1245 Ole Cambridge Road, Clover. For more information, call Carolyn Pate, 222-1232, or Windy Bartee, 222-7533.

* 4 p.m. today – A Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guard will be on hand during a brief ceremony to restore the last of more than two dozen bronze flower vases stolen and vandalized this week at veterans graves in Bass-Cauthen Cemetery on Heckle Boulevard in Rock Hill. The public is invited.

* 8 p.m. today – The Volunteers of the United States Army Field Band is performing for free to celebrate Veterans Day. The performance will be 8 p.m.  at the Clover School District Auditorium. Don’t miss all the music, from jazz and patriotic, to country and rock ‘n’ roll. Details, 222-8018.

* 10 a.m. Saturday – The York Veterans Day parade heads north on Congress Street from Jefferson Street to Madison Street, with a program at the end in the Whitesides Cleaners parking lot. Downtown York, free.

* Saturday, Nov. 13 – Experience living history at the Veterans Day Encampment at Kings Mountain National Park, near Blacksburg.  Living History Interpreters from the Backcountry Militia will be camped at the park’s visitor center. Visit the militia encampment and enjoy weapons demonstrations throughout the event. The event at Kings Mountain National Military Park, 2625 Park Road, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call (864) 936-7921.

Need help for a disabled adult?

The Flint Hill Community Adult Day Care Center is holding an open house 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at 371 Lige St., Rock Hill.

The service is extended to anyone who needs a social outlet because of inability to get around or those who are unable to be left alone for a long period of time, lack of socialization skills or early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Seniors, get your game on! Deadline today

The Rock Hill Area Senior Sports Classic, for people 50 and older, will be Sept. 20-24. You may choose from golf, horseshoes, basketball free throw and spot shooting, disc golf, bowling, shuffleboard, table tennis, track and field events, bocce and a corn hole toss. All skill levels are welcome. 

 The $15 registration free includes a T-shirt and two lunches. Many events will be played at Boyd Hill Recreation Center, 1165 Constitution Blvd., Rock Hill.
